It’s unlikely that anyone under 55 years-old will remember the weekly television broadcasts of Roman Catholic Bishop Fulton J. Sheen of Rochester, NY. I specifically recall watching his rebroadcasts with my parents as a young boy. Even more sore specifically, I recall watching his series on Communism, Communist Russia (when it was known as the USSR), and the threat that Communism posed to America.
Sadly, many who are reading this will be unable to get past the fact that the orator, a term I use to describe Bishop Sheen with deliberate intent, was Roman Catholic. I suspect that many who do so will self-identify as “Evangelical Christians” and will stop reading and never watch due to their focus on the man instead of the message.
Perhaps even more unfortunate is that others won’t be able to get past the black-and-white imagery, which is no match for today’s high definition image quality. Such is the state of many younger people today.
Yet the message is of critical importance, particularly as we see the state of the United States and the world today. The message seems to portend the rise and popularity of political stars such as Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Robert Francis O’Rourke and others. I ask that you view this message through the lens of current political events while keeping such names in mind.
In this episode, Bishop Sheen discussed how Communism was spreading West and would continue to infiltrate the United States. This broadcast was originally aired over 60 years ago, not long after the death of Joseph Stalin in the spring of 1953.
Please, just watch and consider the parallels to today.
